Kitchen Island Receptacles

ElectricalKitchensKitchen island / peninsula wiring regulations have changed, and many find this quite frustrating.
Prior to 2023, the National Electric Code (NEC) required outlets on a per-square-foot basis in any kitchen island or peninsula. Now, according to Section 210.52(C)(2) and (C)(3) outlets are optional but the following requirements must be met:
- If no outlet is installed, provisions for one in the future must be made - i.e., wire or conduit must be fed into the island
- If a receptacle is chosen, it must:
- be above the counter surface no more than 20" (which for a single-level counter is impossible)
- or a receptacle listed for countertop use, such as a popup-type unit as pictured above.
If you have existing outlets that do no meet these updated standards and your are not remodeling your kitchen then they are grandfathered in and no change is needed. However, of you are having your kitchen remodeled or are building new, these updated code requirements will be enforced.
Many people find this inconvenient as they really don't want to cut a hole in their expensive counter and install an unsightly popup unit. Unfortunately, there is no way around. But this modification to the NEC was done for a reason and I suspect it is purely about safety. Imagine having a crock pot sitting on your counter and plugged into an outlet on the side. Now imagine your child or pet tangling with the cord and dumping hot food on themself - not pretty. This is one significant area where design, practicality, cost and safety collide. As it should, safety wins!
